Image: Dancing during the fiesta of the Virgin of the Alta Gracia, Huamachuco, Peru (2015). The fiesta is the most important annual ritual of community making. My research argues that this ritual labour in the centre of the city establishes communal membership and rights to communal resources, including public investment projects.

Photographic method

As part of my observation and participatory approach to research, I use photography extensively. During fieldwork this allows both observation and participation in events. The images are used as data for analysis and as a method of communicating findings to readers.

My photographic approach is collaborative, working with communities to understand what is observed through images, and as far as possible sharing prints with collaborators.

I trained at the London College of Communication, University of the Arts London.

Public investment projects in Huamachuco, Sánchez Carrión, Peru

All the images here were made whilst working with the people of Huamachuco, over a two year period when researching the local realisation of public investment projects. I am indebted to all in Huamachuco for their warm welcome and collaboration.

Below are a small selection of images, a gallery is under development.

Image: Commemoration of José Faustino Sánchez Carrión, Huamachuco Plaza (2014). A key figure in the founding of the Peruvian Republic who was from Huamachuco, and after whom the Province is named. My research argues that local narratives of his actions are intertwined with local identities, conceptions of morality, modernity and social change.
